Jicama Sticks

The combination of lime, salt and chili finds its way into lots of Mexican recipes. There’s even a great condiment powder called Tajin; sprinkle it on most anything for an instant kick.

Ingredients

1 jicama, about 1 lb
1 lime
½ tsp chili powder (or ¼ tsp cayenne, if you want it spicier)
salt

Instructions

  1. Slice off the top and bottom of the jicama, and peel. Cut into matchsticks.
  2. Juice the lime and add to the jicama sticks.
  3. Add the chili powder, and stir to combine.
  4. Salt to taste, stir and let set for 30 minutes or so before serving.

My husband says: If you’ve never tried jicama, it’s a crunchy, slightly fruity, round tuberous root. When fresh, it tastes kind of like a cross between apple and potato.

If you can find them, try this same recipe on fresh green chickpeas, in the pod. Four people can mow through a kilo of those in no time flat.
