An old rule of thumb for sailing from England to the Caribbean was to sail south till the butter melted, then proceed west.

Jerk, as in “Jerk Chicken” refers to the spice blend used in barbequed meat dishes.

Callaloo, an ingredient that is featured in many dishes served in Jamaica is a type of spinach that originated in Africa.

Food in the Caribbean is based on mostly African, Spanish, Chinese, and East Indian, but generally are crossovers of the cuisines from the rest of the world.

We Begin in Provence

Provence seemed like an obvious starting point for this blog: this is summer, and that's where we go to spend our summers.

I sort of have a thing about France (but that’s a story for another time). Back in 1995, I was desperately missing being there, so I convinced my husband, Mark, to vacation in Provence. It was an instant hit with the whole family.

Karen: Lillet is popular in the US right now... I remember when it was "the aperitif of choice" for French ladies "of a certain age"!
